Colossal in size and musical scope, the grand piano is the unmistakable centerpiece of any orchestral setting. With its boundless expression – resonant, wild and unbridled, yet highly expressive – it can take on any conceivable musical scenario, from roaringly loud to velvety fragile.

In this EKX add-on for EZkeys 2, we took perhaps the grandest of grand pianos, placed it in one of the most immaculately designed studio rooms ever built, and used the very best the world has to offer in terms of recording technology to capture it. The result is one that is immaculately grand, stunningly epic in every way imaginable. Weare talking about the Steinway* D-274, one of the most famous instruments of its kind in the world and the first choice for concert halls around the world. This majestic, one-of-a-kind 274-centimeter-long colossus is a marvel of engineering and craftsmanship, comprising 12,000 individual parts assembled with the utmost detail. To capture it, where better to go than the main hall of Galaxy Studios – the same hall where the main library for Superior Drummer 3 and several other Toontrack libraries were recorded.

It measures 330 square meters and is an intimidating floor-to-ceiling height, with an ambience designed for natural yet controlled reverberation. To provide flexibility for use in any project, from full-scale and orchestral to intimate and scaled-down, the recording system included an array of 19 individual microphones.

In the final product, these microphones are used to create ready-to-mix presets that showcase the instrument in a wealth of different microphone configurations and timbres. In addition to the sounds and presets, the package includes a basic MIDI collection unique to the product and tailored to the instrument.

If you are looking for a refined EKX that spans the spectrum from nuanced and subtle to expressive and majestic, this is it.
